SPARC has recently launched the NZ CoachApproach DVD and supporting resources to promote the NZ CoachApproach and show examples of quality New Zealand coaches in their coaching environment.
The supporting resources can be used in interactive workshops or as handouts to compliment the DVD.
The project, led by Paul Ackerley, Senior Advisor - Coach Education and Development at SPARC, took a couple of years to come together and included input from key SPARC personnel as well as stakeholders.
“It all came about through discussions between the SPARC Coaching Team and the Academy of Sport Coaching Team,” says Paul. "The CoachApproach concept had been trialed with high performance coaches and was delivered at a CoachForce workshop in June 2006. However, due to lack of resourcing and backup, traction was limited.”
The production of the DVD and supporting resources came about as a result of a project initiated at a workshop for National Sports Organisations (NSO) Coaching Directors and CoachForce Managers in April 2008.
“The workshop attendees were keen to develop the CoachApproach concept further and identified the need to develop the DVD and supporting resources,” says Paul. “They could see it would have huge potential with their coaches and were keen to get it underway.”
Initial timelines for the DVD completion were extended until February 2009, due to involvement of key personnel in the Olympics and the Christmas period.
The SPARC Coaching Team and key Academy of Sport Coaching team members were integral to the consultation and quality monitoring group.
The DVD is designed to be used by NSOs and others involved in the development and support of coaches, and can be used as a resource at coach development workshops and in educational institutions, or it can potentially be used as a self-learning resource for individual coaches.
“It’s a resource to promote reflection and discussion, and provide ideas for coaches to try in their own coaching practice, rather than providing instructional information on coaching,” says Paul.
The main part of the DVD ‘NZ CoachApproach section’ is just over 40 minutes long, however there’s another hour or so of support material included.
The DVD was first shown at the 'Winning on the World Stage' Conference in February 2009, but was formally launched at the NSO Coaching Directors and Regional Sports Trusts (RST) CoachForce managers meeting in early April. So far, it has been distributed to coaching personnel at the NZ Academy of Sport, NSOs, RSTs and a selection of tertiary institutions.
Initial feedback from the NSO and RST coaching networks has been very positive.
