Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the Coach Development Framework?
The Framework:
- outlines the future philosophy and direction of coach development in New Zealand
- provides guidance to national sport organisations (NSOs) for the production of coach development programmes.
- helps align the roles of key players in coaching.
What are some of the key changes outlined in the Framework document?
Coach development will be based on the needs of the athletes being coached, rather than emphasising levels of coach knowledge and skill.
NSOs will drive coach development through programmes that integrate sport-specific and general principles of coaching within coaching practice.
There is an increased emphasis on:
- 'how' rather than 'what' to coach
- ongoing flexible professional development of coaches. (There is a change in mind set from coach education to coach development)
- support for coaches to practise athlete-centred coaching
- coaching in practice, rather than theoretically based learning.
How will the Coach Development Framework be implemented?
The transition to the new approach will be progressive.
SPARC has developed an implementation plan that is being communicated to key players in coaching. A simplified version of the plan will be available on this website in mid-May (06).
To initiate implementation, SPARC will conduct a small number of pilot projects with selected NSOs and other coaching key players, to produce general principle and sport-specific coach development materials. Initial projects involving NSOs will target those with full-time SPARC-supported coaching directors who are ready to commit to aligning their NSO programmes with the Coach Development Framework. The outcomes of the pilot projects will be electronically available for all NSOs to use in programme and resource development.
Coaching materials will include electronic modules, sample learning activities and resources that NSOs (and others involved in coach development) can adapt and use in their programmes.
SPARC will provide ongoing advice and guidance to all NSOs to develop programmes.
What will happen to current Coaching New Zealand (CNZ) courses?
SPARC will no longer coordinate and certify CNZ courses from the beginning of 2007.
Electronic copies of CNZ 'Getting Started in Coaching' booklets and Levels 1 and 2 'The Principles of Sports Coaching' manuals and workbooks will be available on this website. NSOs and regional sports trusts can use these to help deliver general principle components of NSO programmes during the transition period.
Materials from CNZ manuals will be adapted for use in the new system.
Guidelines covering recognition of prior learning will be produced, to allow CNZ achievement to be recognised in the new system.
