Short-term extension for SPARC Chair

SPARC chairman John Wells has had his appointment extended six months until June 30, 2009.

Mr Wells has held the position since May 2001 and will be standing down next year. The extension to his appointment is a transitional one to cover the election period.

Prior to being Chair of SPARC, Mr Wells was on the board of the New Zealand Sports Foundation, and was chairman of the National Coordinating Committee reviewing the delivery of high performance sport which saw the New Zealand Academy of Sport formed.

Mr Wells was a member of the bid committee which successfully gained New Zealand the hosting rights for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

He is a director of RNZ 2011 Ltd, and also of Karapiro 2010 Ltd. Lake Karapiro is the site for the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

Mr Wells, a merchant banker, also holds a number of other directorships.

Also approved recently was the re-appointment of board member Rob Fisher.

Mr Fisher, who joined SPARC’s board in July 2005, has been re-appointed for another three-year term until June 30, 2011.

Mr Fisher is chairman of Simpson Grierson and specialises in leading large, resource management oriented projects for a range of private and public sector developers.

He was chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union between 1997 and 1999, is former vice-chairman of the International Rugby Board and former director of the Rugby World Cup.
