Please read the following information as this is crucial to the recognition process.

All applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Have as their primary purpose the management and delivery of physical recreation and/or sport, or the provision and maintenance of an environment that supports the opportunity for physical activity and sport;
  • Be nationally representative of all New Zealanders participating in that physical recreation and/or sport activity;
    • applicants must demonstrate a national geographic coverage for their activity;
  • Be the sole national body representative for their physical recreation and/or sport activity, and be significantly different from other organisations claiming responsibility for that physical recreation or sport activity;
  • Have a mandate to act as the national body from their membership or participants, and will be the member in New Zealand of the relevant international body (if one exists);
  • Have a legal status as a charitable trust or incorporated society and have operated for at least two years prior to applying for recognition (except in special circumstances as SPARC may deem appropriate), and can demonstrate they are a currently active and functioning organisation;
  • Have an approved anti-doping policy; and,
  • Have and implement any policies that SPARC may require from time to time.
Recognition requirements

All applications must be supported by the following (note that incomplete applications will not be processed):

  • Latest audited annual accounts;
  • Latest Annual, Board, Executive or similar report presented to the organisation membership;
  • Copy of the organisation’s Certificate of Incorporation;
  • Copy of the organisation’s constitution;
  • Copy of the organisation’s anti-doping policy (sport organisations only). This must comply with the Sports Anti-Doping Rules (as defined under the Sports Anti-doping Act 2006) or the WADA Anti-Doping Code.
  • Organisational structure diagram, including:
    • Executive Committee (or similar);
    • Regions or Provinces (or other as may be applicable);
    • Names and number of clubs per region or province;
  • Evidenced-based membership data for the last two years – unsubstantiated estimates will not be sufficient;
  • Where the organisation is not the only national body responsible for its physical recreation and/or sport activity, letters of support must be supplied from similar bodies endorsing the organisation as the appropriate body for recognition by SPARC; and,
  • A brief outline on the operations of your organisation (i.e. what does your organisation do?); a current strategic plan for the organisation can also be appended to this.

You should fill out the Online recognition application form and forward all information required. This should be in electronic form and can be in a number of formats (PDF, Word and/or Excel, for instance).

Once SPARC receives the complete application, you will be notified within 10 days of the timeframe for processing your application.
