Wellington City Council - Talent Development Programme
Introduction to the Talent Development Programme
Wellington City Council (WCC) Talent Development Programme is a partnership between WCC and the New Zealand Academy of Sport (NZAS) North Island.
The programme aims to increase the number of successful sportspeople from Wellington City at the international level and to contribute to community outcomes, particularly for young people. Programme organisers are keen to capture the potential of sporting passion and sportspeople as mentors to impact positively on communities.
Partnerships are central to the programme. WCC was interested in developing a project in this area, but it lacked the expertise to do so. It therefore made sense to build a programme in partnership. NZAS North Island brings expertise in developing sporting talent.
The NZAS is the national sporting academy funded by SPARC to help New Zealand support its high performance athletes. The Academy is also funded by SPARC to conduct a Regional Talent Development Programme. The NZAS has extensive expertise in the area of talent development, which makes them a great resource for local councils, as well as aiding in connecting the policy for national sport organisations with practice at a regional level.
A key strategy is to bridge the gap in sports talent development around less established, un-carded athletes. The programme helps feed into the national carding (accreditation) system for sportspeople, where high-performance support is more readily available.
