Creating the Push Play Neighbourhood Collectives

Harbour Sport has been project managing the work of community based Push Play Neighbourhood Co-ordinators. Active Communities Manager, Jay Martin, set co-ordinators the challenge of developing collectives of volunteers in Wellsford, Warkworth South Kaipara and Mahurangi East.

Co-ordinators discovered people willing to volunteer did so for a range of reasons. Some wanted to be part of the collectives to represent a particular sport they were involved in. Others joined because they had a general interest in helping people to get more active in their communities and wanted to be part of a group that could make things happen.

The collectives aim to strengthen local sports clubs. They also aim to plug gaps in the sector so there are sport and recreation opportunities for everyone, of all ages. Ensuring a range of activity options are available locally for SPARC’s Green Prescriptions initiative (part funded by the Ministry of Health) is another focus for the collectives.

Although early days for each collective, activity in each of the towns is notably rising, with new and/or revived opportunities ranging from touch rugby to hiking; tai chi to skateboarding; and pilates to walking groups.
