Expanding the 10,000 Steps Northland brand
Active Workplaces and Disc Golf
Active Workplaces
The Active Workplace challenge is about getting staff more active and promoting sustainable health and physical activity culture in the workplace. Sport Northland work with individual workplaces to develop specific
interactive 12-month intervention plans. Each plan is likely to include a mix of:
- environmental changes
- behaviour modification
- managerial policies and practices.
The programme has been very successful to date, and is flexible enough to be adapted by different workplaces to suit their own needs and preferences.
Active Workplaces result in the following improvements to business performance:
- productivity
- absenteeism reduction
- staff retention improved
- reducing workplace injuries
- improving work ability among older employees
- creating a positive workplace image and environment
- improving the morale and health of the workforce.
Disc Golf
Disc Golf, or Frisbee Golf as it is sometimes known, has proved to be very popular and is now included under the 10,000 Steps Northland brand. Like a golf course, players begin at a certain point (the ‘tee’)
and have to land the disc in nets (the ‘green’). It is easy to play, can be played at any pace, is very sociable and increases your steps at the same time.
In response to the enthusiasm of Sport Northland and ASB for the Disc Golf project, the Whangarei District Council approved the usage of the Raumanga Falls Reserve as the host sight for New Zealand’s fourth permanent
Disc Golf course. With continuing support from the community, the Disc Golf programme is being expanded to include three more permanent courses and 6 portable sets. The new courses are making a valuable contribution to
the sport and recreation infrastructure in the community.
