Bike Northland – Other learnings
Other learnings
Explore wider opportunities
Take a broader view of what the public wants, not just your existing members.
For example, Bike Northland has been able to get a representative onto the Whangarei Walking and Cycling Strategy Group, a group of stakeholders brought together to provide Whangarei District Council with guidance, advice and feedback on walking and cycling matters. It has been through involvement in this group that Bike Northland has been able to ensure funding from Whangarei District Council is utilised to implement a cycle safety promotion, funding that is allocated by the Council and comes from Land Transport NZ.
Key people and relationship building

It is the club’s responsibility to choose key people who will have responsibility to act for the group, people who can be constructive and work well with others. There will always be differences of opinion and focus but getting the right people, with the right attitude, working together, has been crucial for the success of Bike Northland.
Similarly, building relationships within the regional sporting organisation and beyond, for example between Bike Northland and key parties such as Sport Northland and Whangarei District Council, has been crucial. These relationships have enabled Bike Northland to progress rapidly, even when some of the initial concepts were new and challenging for some stakeholders.
Ultimately, these partnerships have provided a great platform for a new regional sporting organisation and a new facility that will be a unique development and a great boost to cycling in Northland.
