High performance coaches
Behind every great athlete, there is a great coach. SPARC is committed to assisting National Sport Organisations attract, develop and retain world class coaches in order for athletes to win on the world stage.
National Sport Organisations receiving high performance investment can “card” their very best high performance coaches through the New Zealand Academy of Sport. These Carded Coaches can access a range of services and resources to achieve the targets they (and their athletes) set. If you are not carded and would like to know more, contact your
National Sport Organisation.

SPARC invests $600,000 into NZ's top coaches. Read the media release.
SPARC and the New Zealand Academy of Sport are currently refining and enhancing the Carded Coach Programme. These improvements will be rolled out after the Beijing Olympics. Information will be posted here between March and October so watch this space!
A carded coach can access:
- A nationwide Coach Support Team, who can help you to:
- identify opportunities to make you (and your athletes) more successful;
- design a performance and development plan;
- improve your coaching practice, and
- look for ways to increase your paid time to coach.
- Professional development seminars such as performance planning, leadership and coach technology tools.
- Any other service, e.g. sport science or sports medicine, which might help you to become more successful.
- Find out more about accessing funding for your personalised professional development through the Prime Minister’s Coach Scholarship programme. These scholarships are also available to non-carded coaches.
- Find out more about how you can access the latest technology and coach information through a nationwide network of high performance Coach Resource Centres.
- Find out more about salary subsidies, called Coach Performance Enhancement Grants.
