It's All About Children and Young People

'It's All About Children and Young People: Implementing a Child/Young Person-Centred Philosophy in Sport and Recreation' is  a document that provides guidance for organisations or individuals that run sport and recreation programmes for children and young people (0-24 years).

The guidelines encourage a youth-centred philosophy that ensures that children and young people receive the greatest possible value from their participation in sport and continue to participate over time.

The Sport and Recreation Pathway

Sport and recreation is an important part of the New Zealand lifestyle. We learn, grow, set and achieve goals, develop and master movement skills through sport and recreation. When children are under five their ‘foundation’ phase is particularly important.

Guidelines for Sustainable Physical Activity in School Communities

These guidelines are intended for school principals, curriculum managers responsible for health and physical education programmes, and teachers of health and physical education programmes.

They will also be useful to sport and recreation co-ordinators, parent and whānau groups, regional sports trust facilitators, community agencies working with teachers, and for schools.

The guidelines were produced by the Ministry of Education, and supported by SPARC.

Secondary Schools Forum 2009

Ideas into ACtion LogoSPARC facilitated a series of forums across New Zealand in June 2009. These forums were for people working in sport and recreation in secondary schools and covered two broad ideas:

  1. Sport and recreation provides explicit learning contexts within secondary school curriculums.
  2. Involvement of the whole school community in secondary schools is feasible both cognitively and operationally.

The forums included a range of PowerPoint slide shows, video footage from Mana College and Paraparaumu College, and interactive discussion activities.

The following content from the forums is provided for your information.
