Youth Leadership

The sport and recreation environment can be a powerful place to learn about leadership.

Growing Leaders Programme

The Growing Leaders programme provides learning and leadership experiences for young people aged 9-18 years.

Growing Leaders is designed to:

  • teach young people about leadership
  • encourage young people to pursue leadership roles in sport and recreation
  • give young people self-confidence and leadership tools for life.

Growing Leaders can be used to develop a broad range of leadership roles, for example team captains, prefects, peer leaders, coaches, managers, sports administrators, sport and recreation officials, and outdoor recreation leaders.

The Growing Leaders resource can be used in a range of settings – physical education classes, school sports programmes, outdoor education trips, lunchtime and after school recreation activities, sport and recreation clubs, and youth groups.

How does the resource work?

Growing Leaders consists of four stages of leader learning – ‘Explore’, ‘Discover’, ‘Navigate’, and ‘Empower’.

Each of the stages in Growing Leaders includes activities that cover a set of themes and sub themes relating to leadership – ‘Leading Self’, ‘Connectedness’, ‘Contributing and Influencing’, ‘Understanding Others’, ‘Relating to and Communicating with Others’, ‘Planning to Lead’ and ‘Leading in Action’. Participant are awarded a certificate as they successfully completes each stage of ‘Growing Leaders’.

What’s included in the resource?

The resource includes a facilitator’s guide, learning activities with facilitator’s notes for each stage, a ‘Leader ThinkTank’ document that provides additional information about leadership for Facilitators, and completion certificates for each stage.

A series of PowerPoint presentations have also been prepared for facilitator’s to use. Who can use the resource and facilitate Growing Leaders?

Growing Leaders facilitators are:

  • primary, intermediate, and secondary school teachers
  • school sport and recreation co-ordinators
  • sport and recreation co-ordinators
  • sport and recreation coaches, leaders, and administrators
  • recreation officers based in local body councils
  • youth group leaders (for example Boys and Girls Brigade, Guides, Scouts)
  • church groups that run youth programmes

Where can I get the Growing Leaders resource from?

Hardcopy

Hardcopies of the Growing Leaders resource can be purchased from the SPARC Store for $50 plus freight.

This includes:

  • the ‘Growing Leaders Facilitator Resource’ ring binder
  • a hard copy of the ‘Facilitator’s Guide’
  • hard copies of activity sheets and facilitator notes for each stage
  • a hard copy of the certificate of completion for each stage
  • a CD-Rom that includes the ‘Leader ThinkTank’ document, the 'Facilitator’s Guide, activity sheets and facilitator notes for each stage, some additional activities, Word templates for creating your own activities, templates for producing your own completion certificates, and PowerPoint Presentations on leadership.

Other Growing Leaders resources available

  • Hardcopies of the Growing Leaders completion certificates can be purchased from SPARC Store for 30 cents each plus freight.
  • Participant ‘Leader Journal’ folders can be purchased from SPARC Store for $6 each plus freight. Participants can use their ‘Leader Journal’ folders to store completed Growing Leaders activities.
