2: Student health promotion

Initiative 2 involves promoting healthy food options and providing the incentive and opportunities for students to get actively involved in learning about healthy nutrition.

What's happening?

The Ministry of Education is co-ordinating this initiative in 2007 and has undertaken:

  1. a series of high profile Mission-On events in primary, intermediate and secondary schools around New Zealand, involving healthy food preparation demonstrations, student presentations, and a high energy dance performance;
  2. profiling of school’s experiences, whereby case studies across a range of schools are documented as a means of sharing best practice nationwide;
  3. a national competition focusing on healthy lunch options and the importance of good nutrition. Hundreds of young people entered the competition and created their ideal healthy lunchbox.

Planned activities include:

  1. Further Mission-On school events until December 2007;
  2. Facilitating student-driven, in-school programmes to promote improved food and nutrition environments, and to encourage student to buy healthy options;
  3. Carefully targeted social marketing communications to maintain student awareness of the Mission-On brand and key messages.
