9 Dec 2008

New Zealand’s top sports journalists and photographers were recognised at the 2008 Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards Dinner in Auckland on November 28.

The Awards, sponsored by SPARC, attracted around 250 past and present media and sporting celebrities. Among the special guests were representatives of the 1968 gold medal winning coxed four at the Mexico Olympics and representatives of the 1988 and 2008 Olympian team.

Present on the night were, Dudley Storey, Ross Collinge, Dick Joyce, Warren Cole and Simon Dickie from the 1968 Olympics, 1988 gold medallist Ian Ferguson, 1992 Olympic board sailing winner Barbara Kendall and 2008 Beijing Olympic swimmers, Moss Burmester, Melissa Ingram and Alison Fitch.

Also making a surprise appearance were members of the New Zealand Rugby League including chairman Ray Haffenden and former Kiwis and Warriors player and coach Tony Kemp who brought the Rugby League Cup Trophy with them. Their entrance was warmly greeted.

At the dinner Dudley Storey, on behalf of the 1968 Olympians and Ian Ferguson from Seoul in 1988, entertained guests recalling some of their special moments from their respective campaigns. Ray Haffenden spoke about the Kiwis great performance to beat Australia in the Rugby League World Cup Final in Brisbane last Saturday.

A record 247 entries were received for this year’s TP McLean Awards and the big prize on the night went to Sky Sport Magazine editor Eric Young, who took out the supreme SPARC Sports Journalist of the Year Award. Young also won the Steinlager Award for Magazine Feature Writing and Millennium Hotels Sports Column/Opinion categories.

The SPARC Lifetime Contribution to Sport through Journalism Award went to Bob Howitt, one of New Zealand’s most respected rugby journalists.

Three journalists were also made Life Members of the NZSJA – NZ Herald soccer writer Terry Maddaford, long time freelance and now NZPA chief photographer Ross Setford and former Auckland Star Sports Editor Armin Lindenberg, Secretary of the NZSJA for the last 10 years.
